We have all heard that in order for our body to burn fat, we must get it into ketosis. But what exactly does that mean and what steps must we take in order to get our body to start burning our fat?
Ketosis is when the body converts fat into compounds called ketones. This means our body begins using ketones as the main source of energy. In order to get our body to start producing ketones and burning our fat, we must increase our fat intake.
Popular ketogenic diet resources say we should have an average of 70-80% fat, 5-10% carbohydrates and 10-20% protein each day from the calories we consume.
Here is a list of good fats to get you started:
- Nuts and seeds
- Olives and olive oil
- Salmon and other fish
- Organic bone broth
- High quality dairy
A great way to know if you are getting enough fat is to download the My Fitness Pal app and add in all of the food you eat each day. It will then break it down into a graph showing you exactly how much fat, protein and carbs you have ingested.
BONUS TIP: You can buy ketone urinalysis testing strips, which will instantly tell you if you are in ketosis! Any drugstore should have them, but you can also buy online from Amazon here: https://www.amazon.ca/Urine-Ketone-Strips-Suitable-Diabetics/dp/B072Q2TWTC
